Kathleen Gefell was born in western New York State, and currently resides in New York City and Poughquag, New York. She has studied with Michael Burban and Kenneth McIndoe at The Art Students’ League in Manhattan, Seth Nader in Dutchess County, New York and Dominique Medici in New York City. She is a member of the Dutchess County Community Council, Barret Art Center in Poughkeepsie, New York, the Kent Art Association in Kent, Connecticut and the Art Students’ League.
Her work has been shown recently at Pleiades Gallery in New York City and Nantucket Art Works in Massachusetts, the Cooper-Finn Gallery in Connecticut and at the Mamaroneck Artist Guild. She is a recipient of the Kuniyoshi Award for painting 2014-2015 the 2015-16 Merit Scholarship: The Art Students’League.
Ms. Gefell is concerned with interpreting the natural world, emphasizing and exaggerating the abstract shapes, strange lines and textures and looking for the colors within colors. ‘I am especially indebted to artists, such as Nicholas De Stael, who inspire landscapes that reach the sweet spot between abstraction and representation.’ Kathleen Gefell works primarily with the palette knife in oil on canvas and paper.
